These games are too good to be left collecting dust behind a colossal and I have put together this guide on emulating PoR/RD, which covers two different methods, Dolphin Emulator and Wii Homebrew. Emulate the damn game, it’s not like they’re making a cent out of second-hand copies being resold anyway. Normally if a legitimate means for obtaining a game exists, I would suggest going for that first, but since Nintendo has made absolutely no effort whatsoever to make these games more accessible. Also it saved the franchise, so that’s a plus.Have you always wanted to play Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn but don’t have a couple hundred dollars lying around to shell out for overpriced second-hand copies on ebay? Then boy do I have good news for you! But it is wildly fun to speed run with a different set of units or just challenge yourself with the higher difficulties. It’s also just plain good fun, if not a little basic and slow at times.ĥ – Awakening – This game has a dumb story after it’s first ‘arc’ and characters are admittedly too troupey at times (kind of a guilty pleasure), and the game is pretty dumbed down compared to others in the series. It’s got a well written story and cast of characters for the most part and almost feels like a Fire Emblem sandbox for how much you can customize your units to your exact specifications.Ĥ – Path of Radiance – While this game’s characters aren’t too terribly interesting (especially Ike), it has a fleshed out world that makes each piece of lore interesting to soak in. That said it hasn’t aged incredibly and could use a remake.ģ – Three Houses – I thought the game would suck and caught me entirely by surprise. It blends its game and narrative elements together very well, basically culminating in a playable war drama. It’s a lot more RPG like than any other Fire Emblem and that might be the main deciding factor in my decision… Also the music and voice acting and presentation in general are top notch.Ģ- Genealogy of the Holy War – The one on the list I admittedly never finished but this game is basically what comes to mind when I think of Fire Emblem.
Shadows of Valentia – It’s map design is hot garbage but it does everything else so well that it easily evens out to my favorite. My list is subject to change after I play them all but for now the list is…ġ.

Replaying Shadows of Valentia right now and that game is just a treat even with its trash map design.ĭecided to play or replay through every game in the series (barring the technical first three because they have remakes that basically replace them) It’s still the worst remake of the three by far though. I used to think this was the worst game in the series.
But to be quite honest, if I had to choose between a couple of really well written characters in simple yet focused story, or 60+ one dimensional dating personas in a messy trash fire of writing we would see in Fates… Gonna have to go with the former.Įven as a game alone, once you turn off those ugly ass animations, Shadow Dragon becomes a fun challenge you can run through in about 12-15 hours with plenty of different characters and difficulties to experiment with in further playthroughs. It is unfortunate that out of the dozens of characters in the game, only a small handful of them are developed throughout (extra unfortunate considering the game we never got added support conversations).

The localization team behind the game (who also localized Awakening and Echoes) really know how to play to the setting and bring the world to life, even with the limitations of being a retelling of a story from a 1990 famicom game. But what is there is well-written, acting as an intriguing prologue of sorts to a game we unfortunately never got in the states (being New Mystery of the Emblem). Yes, the story is very simplistic compared to future entries and characters are almost non-existent. I used to think the game was a boring slog but upon playing it again I found it incredibly enjoyable. I actually replayed Shadow Dragon a few weeks ago (I’m marathoning the entire series) and my impressions of it took a complete 180.
